What are your Thanksgiving traditions? Here are some of the traditions shared by a few True Botanica employees:
This year my family is trying something a bit different for Thanksgiving. This might sound blasphemous, but I personally was getting tired of the same old meal (same dishes, same recipes) year after year, and apparently several of my cousins felt the same way. We started talking and we figured that since we are now all in our 20s and 30s, it is about time that we start chipping in. We took over all the planning and cooking responsibilities. We also decided that, in addition to making the Thanksgiving staples (the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc.), we would also mix it up a bit and make some of our own favorite recipes like enchiladas and stuffed mushrooms. I can’t wait to sample all of the new recipes and to see all of my family on Thursday!
For thanksgiving this year I am on desert duty! In addition to the classics of Apple, Pecan and Pumpkin pie I will be making Key Lime pie and Chocolate Silk pie for the first time-hopefully they turn out. I’m excited to spend the day baking and preparing for this year’s Thanksgiving which will be different from all other ones in the past because I will be joining my fiancé and his enormous family for the first time.
This will be the first Thanksgiving without my grandparents. As the matriarch and patriarch of the family, they did all the planning to bring us all together for Thanksgiving. My cousin and I were talking about this at my grandfather’s funeral and wondered who would take the lead in planning everything for this year’s Thanksgiving. We decided that we would work together to accomplish this. While my cousin took the lead, I helped in calling all of the aunts, uncles and cousins and we will all be gathering in the same location as we have over the past years, keeping the tradition going.
This year my friends and I decided to have a “Friendsgiving” on the Friday after Thanksgiving. As we’ve grown older, many have moved away but still come home for the holiday. I offered to host the event and will be making my favorite Thanksgiving dish, green bean casserole. It’s been fun seeing the types of dishes my friends have signed up to bring, merging together all of our favorite family traditions. In addition to us all bringing a dish to pass, we will all bring our old clothes to donate to a local charity. I’m eager to see how everything goes and hope this turns in to a new Thanksgiving tradition.
Happy Thanksgiving from the True Botanica Team!
